Our rescue is a registered 501(c)3 charity with the IRS.  We are active in Maryland, South and South Central Pennsylvania, Northern Virginia, and D.C.  We are a group of volunteers, dedicated to  rescuing and placing German Shepherds in good homes.

MAGSR Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is Mid-Atlantic German Shepherd Rescue?
MAGSR is a nonprofit organization dedicated to finding homes for German Shepherd Dogs in the Mid-Atlantic area. We were formed in 1999 by a small group of dedicated volunteers. Since then, we’ve grown considerably both in size and in the number of dogs we handle.

  2. Who are the people of MAGSR?
Everyone affiliated with MAGSR is a volunteer who has set aside time and other resources to help these wonderful dogs.  MAGSR has an active board of directors as well as several dozen volunteers who perform any number of jobs on behalf of the dogs and their owners. We all have careers, families, and responsibilities other than MAGSR

  3. Can I come to MAGSR and see the dogs?
If only it were that simple! There is no central MAGSR location where you can come
to drop off papers or visit the dogs. Our goal is to have every one of our waiting dogs in a “for now” home while they wait for a forever home. We call these foster homes. We have foster “parents” all over the Mid-Atlantic area--the dogs live in these foster homes until we can permanently place them.

Invariably, we always have more dogs than foster homes, so some dogs have to wait a short time in the kennel. But always, the vast majority are in foster care.

  4. Where does MAGSR place dogs?
Maryland, Delaware, District of Columbia, southern Pennsylvania, and Northern Virginia. Occasionally into West Virginia or other surrounding regions.
